This isn’t your ordinary paint by number kit–and Creature from the Black Lagoon isn’t your ordinary monster! Featuring the design adapted from a vintage French movie poster, this incredible kit offers hours of fun to create your own horror-ifically awesome piece of art.
There are a ton of paint by numbers kits out there, from cute cats to florals, from scenic sunsets to the streets of Paris, and everything in between. And with everything going on with the 2020 quarantine, having a paint kit or similar DIY craft has suddenly become the activity of choice. What better way to combine two totally awesome things–classic horror films and tubs of acrylic paint–and create something fantastic?!
Of course, not every paint kit is created equal. The Olivia’s brand paint by numbers kits are all made in the USA with our printers and hand-mixed inks to create the perfect colors. Each paint kit uses high-quality acrylic inks for a vibrant finished piece, and uses canvas coated linen paper for that authentic artist look and feel. By time they’re done, you’ll want to display them in your own home art gallery!
What You Need For a Paint By Numbers Kit
Our kits come equipped with almost everything you need to begin painting right out of the box, including:
- A brush
- Numbered paint pots
- Reference Picture
- Tip Sheet on how to paint your kit
- Canvas
A few extra things you’ll need are likely things you already have on hand:
- Cup of Water
- Paper towels or an old rag to dry the brushes
- Newspapers or something to protect your workspace as you paint
- Clear acrylic sealer to finish your painting (you find one on Amazon here, but just so you know, Olivias may collect a profit should you decide to buy from this link)
Cleaning your brush in between colors is recommended, especially for beginners. However, when working with colors alongside one another, such as the colors in Kay’s skin, not cleaning the brush in between reds and orange, or orange and yellow helps to blend in the colors and make the paint by number look a little bit more authentic.
Helpful Tips and Tricks
- Start from left to right. Some painters prefer to work with one color at a time on the entire canvas. With a larger canvas like this one, working with wet paint on the entire canvas can smudge the picture. Try working with one color at a time in large chunks of the painting from left to right. Or, if you’re left handed, from right to left.
- Go heavy over numbers. Let’s face it: the numbers are dead giveaways you didn’t paint it from scratch. But paint by numbers kits don’t have to look like they were painting kits, especially if you hide the numbers! Some colors by nature are less opaque than others, so giving a second or third coat just over the number can make a big difference in the final piece.
- Start from dark to light or from light to dark colors. Many professional painters work in laying down big blocks of dark and light colors to establish shade and light before gradually adding more details. This technique works well with paint by numbers also, especially since it’s easy for paint to cross over into adjacent paint blocks.
- There are no mistakes in art. Paint a block the wrong color? No worries, just wait for it to dry and color over it with the right color. But sometimes putting a color in the wrong spot can actually make the painting a whole lot better. Mistakes are only mistakes based on how you look at them! Take a nod from Bob Ross: “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.”
